Goal: For children in the preschool age range (ages 2-5) to learn to count to 10 and identify the numbers 1 through 10. A sub goal is to have children who are already proficient in counting or become proficient in counting to become motivated to demonstrate their counting ability by teaching counting to a friend or sibling who is having trouble counting.
Materials: Puppets, camera, counting book (in this case 1-2-3 A Child's First Couting book by Alison Jay), a counting song ( in this case “Numbers 1-2-3).
Methods: I create a short puppet show where one of the characters (Piggie) is worried because he (or she) is going to preschool and does not know how to count. The other puppet character Parrot offers to help him learn how to count by singing a counting song while pointing to which number is being sung on a chart. He then reads a counting story to piggie and talks to piggie and the audience letting them know that once they learn how to count they can help their friends or little brother or sisters learn how to count. Finally, the Parrot puppet models tracing letters with your hand as a way to remember the shape of the letter.
Assessment: I would assess whether or not the child learned the goal in different ways depending on the strengths and abilities of that child. Here are some examples of means of assessment I would use:
1 Could the child point to the corresponding numbers when listening to the counting song.
2 Could the child point the total number of objects presented before him or her or that the child sees in a book. (i.e. how many books are in the picture?)
3 Could the child draw a specified number of items? (i.e. asking the child can you draw me 3 piggies by either verbally saying 3 or showing the child the number 3)
4 Observing the child the course of the day and making note if they count any objects or identify numbers that they see in their environment.
